On Tuesday, August 19, at 11:17, the police received information that a person was flying a drone on an unauthorized location in Kiruna. The flight is said to have taken place near the church's former location. A police patrol was sent to the scene and found the man, a European citizen, in his 45s.

The airspace in central Kiruna is usually a controlled airspace. In connection with the ongoing church relocation, the Police Authority and the Transport Agency have created a restricted area. This means that it is the police who give clearance for those who are allowed to fly in the area. The suspect in this case is not supposed to have had permission to fly. At the time of the incident, the police also informed those flying with drones that they had to land as an ambulance helicopter was to land at the hospital.

Interrogations have been held and an investigation has been initiated regarding a violation of air traffic laws, negligence in air traffic.
