Tips for boat owners
Unfortunately, there are no universal solutions that guarantee that you will not be affected by theft. The important thing is that you as a boat owner starts from the location or boat club where the boat is located to identify a problem and what measures can be effective locally.

  • Use geography to your advantage. If possible, do not display your motor so that it is visible from a distance, hide it or place the boat in a way that the objects are not visible from a distance. Check other ways to make the boat difficult for thieves to access.
  • Make sure the boat or harbor can be monitored by guards or from the boat club house. Theft often occurs when it is dark – good lighting in the area is therefore important. Lighting with motion detectors is often effective.
  • Establish a digital boat card with information about your boat, such as the motor number, boat's manufacturing number/branding. If something is stolen, it will greatly facilitate our work at the police to have these details readily available in a potential report.
  • Mark your boat, motor, and other equipment with theft protection and install tracking devices. This will help the police to recover your property if it is stolen. Check with your insurance company which type of tracking devices they approve.
  • Mark your boat motor with both visible and hidden markings. This way, it will be possible to determine who owns the motor even if the thieves try to mark the motor.
  • Establish boat cooperation in your local boat club. See the above section on boat cooperation for contact information and instructions on how to proceed.
