The ferry capsized in rough weather on Tuesday on Lake Kariba, on the border with Zambia and more than 300 kilometers northeast of the capital Harare, according to witnesses. The boat had a capacity of 90 people but was said to have had 114 adult passengers, five crew members and an unknown number of children on board when it sank.
A witness told AFP that the boat left port in the morning in bad weather and may have been hit by a wave, causing the engines to shut down.
It is one of the worst-documented passenger boat accidents on Lake Kariba, which is the world's largest artificial lake by water volume.
