Zheng has previously never reached further than the fourth round, or the round of 16 if you will, in tennis's second Grand Slam event. But now she's in a real streak at Roland Garros.
Last year, she took Olympic gold in singles in Paris after six straight wins. Now she has three more during this year's French Championships.
Russian awaits
The latest, which took Zheng Qinwen to the round of 16, came through 6–3, 6–4 against Canadian Victoria Mboko. Zheng will next face Russian Lyudmila Samsonova.
Shortly after the eighth-seeded Chinese player advanced, she was joined in the fourth round by Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian world number one won seemingly comfortably over Olga Danilovic (6–2, 6–3), but says herself that the Serbian was a tough nut to crack.
Never reached final
I'm super happy about the victory. Olga played like a top ten player, I'm sure she'll soon be one. I'm really glad I made it through this tough match, says Sabalenka in the victory interview on Eurosport.
Sabalenka has won both the Australian Open and the US Open but never reached the final of the French Championships. In the next round, American Amanda Anisimova awaits, who knocked out Danish hope Clara Tauson in two straight sets (7–6, 6–4).
