The 22-year-old started the championship on the sidelines with a thigh injury. In the round of 16 against the USA, he was in the match squad but remained on the bench for the entire game, and now it seems Debast will have to wait even longer for World Cup action.
"His club, Sporting Lisbon, has informed the player that they do not consider him medically fit for match play," the Belgian federation wrote in a statement, according to The Athletic.
The association further writes that its own medical team does not share Sporting's assessment.
If Belgium reaches the semi-finals, Debast's physical condition will be reassessed.
