Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the country's current defense minister, Denys Shmyhal, will be replaced.

“Today we have begun a significant reboot - internal changes to make Ukraine more sustainable,” he said on social media.

Zelenskyy says he has offered the position of new defense minister to Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitalization. The 34-year-old Fedorov is relatively unknown among the Ukrainian population.

“Mykhailo is deeply involved in issues related to drones and is very effective in the digitalization of government services and processes,” says Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy does not give any explanation as to why the current minister of defense is being replaced, but he says that Shmyhal will be given a new role and has been offered another position "that is no less important for our stability."

Shmyhal has only been in his post as minister of defense for six months, while Russian forces have made several advances along the front line.
