Zelenskyy Says Trump Is Pressuring Ukraine to Surrender to Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says US President Donald Trump is trying to pressure Ukraine to surrender to Russia’s invasion. “We have dangerous days ahead of us, until the election,” Zelensky said in an interview with Bloomberg, referring to the US midterm elections. Trump responded with another attack on Zelensky.

"I believe that steps have been taken to convince Ukraine to surrender," Zelensky said in the interview.

At the same time, he cannot definitively say that capitulation is an ultimate goal for Ukraine's partners, but he continued:

"I don't want to believe that our American partners believe that the war against Russia can be ended faster by Ukraine paying the price. But that's how it seems right now," Zelenskyy said from his office at the presidential administration in Kyiv.

At the same time, Zelenskyy proposed that Ukraine stop attacking Russian energy targets in exchange for the United States supplying parts for the Patriot air defense system.

Irritated tone

Tensions between Kyiv and Washington have escalated over the past week, while Russian attacks on civilian targets have increased in intensity.

President Trump's decision to also exempt Russia from sanctions related to fuel exports has been criticized by the EU and leading representatives of both Republicans and Democrats in Congress.

In addition, the political situation in the United States is inflamed ahead of the midterm elections on November 3.

Trump has also expressed his dissatisfaction with Zelenskyy personally and said that Ukraine should have a new president.

In a lengthy post on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday evening, Trump claimed that great progress had been made in his peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. He said his decision not to implement a pending sanctions package against Moscow was because he did not want to drive Russia away from the negotiating table.

Trump under new attack

At the same time, he attacks Zelenskyy, saying he “doesn’t care.”

"Frankly - with all the money he gets from Europe, and that corrupt Joe Biden (former US President) has previously given him - he doesn't seem to want to end this war; he probably never did," Trump writes.

Zelenskyy’s reflections on Sunday evening followed a day in which he was interviewed in several places. On NBC’s influential Sunday program Meet The Press, Zelenskyy thanked the United States for once again sharing intelligence on, among other things, Russian attacks.

(The intelligence data) was blocked for a while. And it was the American side that removed the block.
