Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyj and the US's ditto Donald Trump will talk on the phone after the summit in Paris on Thursday.

European leaders, with Emmanuel Macron at the forefront, will also participate in the conversation.

Zelenskyj met with Nordic and Baltic leaders in Copenhagen on Wednesday and was then asked questions about Trump. He said, among other things, that he hoped to get in touch with the American president in connection with the Paris meeting to persuade him to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.

And when we talk about pressure, we mean air defense, arms agreements, and sanctions. He gave Putin a few weeks. They are running out, said Zelenskyj.

”Things are happening”

Donald Trump suggests that new sanctions against Russia may be considered if Vladimir Putin does not reach a peace agreement with Ukraine.

Depending on his decision, we will either be happy or dissatisfied. And if we are dissatisfied, you will notice that things are happening, Trump tells reporters at the White House.

Putin, who is in Beijing for a summit with, among others, Chinese President Xi Jinping, said on Wednesday that he is ready to meet Zelenskyj in Moscow and that Russia will continue to fight with military means as long as a peace agreement is not reached.

Yes to security guarantees

Zelenskyj has previously said that security guarantees are a prerequisite for a meeting between him and Putin.

We Europeans are ready to offer Ukraine and the Ukrainians security guarantees the day a peace agreement is signed, says Emmanuel Macron when he receives Zelenskyj in Paris on Wednesday.

The summit on Ukraine in Paris is organized by Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO chief Mark Rutte, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb are among those participating on site.

Others, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party), are participating digitally.

Thursday's summit begins at 10:30. The phone call with Trump is scheduled to take place at 14, according to the Élysée Palace.
