Zelenskyy's comment came in an interview with French television network France 2. The president also said that "there are a large number of Ukrainians reported missing."
It is rare for Ukraine to officially comment on or confirm the number of dead and wounded in the war.
Russia is also cautious about reporting on its wounded and killed soldiers - and the data are considered not entirely credible and are on the low side.
