In his New Year's address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine wants an end to the war, but not at "any price." He also said that any agreement must include strong security guarantees to deter Russia from invading again.
But Zelenskyy also warned that the most important issues have not been resolved.
The two countries participated in talks in Germany in December. A crucial issue that remains concerns the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump said that an agreement to end the war is closer than ever. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also said that the war could be over soon.
