Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has imposed sanctions on the businessman who is identified as the mastermind behind the major corruption scandal that is shaking the war-torn country.

Timur Mindich, 46, who is close to the president, is subject to “personal special economic” sanctions, according to a decree published by Zelenskyy’s office.

This means, among other things, that Minditj's assets are frozen.

Timur Mindich has "illegally enriched himself by organizing criminal activities in several sectors of Ukraine's economy," a prosecutor from the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (Sapo) said during a court appearance.

The designation was made the day after Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) announced that it had discovered systematic bribery in the energy sector and carried out extensive raids against a number of suspects.

Around $100 million has passed through the money laundering system used, according to Nabu.
