More must be done to stop Russia from accessing essential raw materials for its war industry, the Ukrainian president urged in his speech at the inauguration of Ireland's six-month presidency of the EU Council of Ministers.
Without mentioning any names, it is clear that he was referring primarily to the giant aluminium plant in Aughinish in southwest Ireland, which exports hundreds of thousands of tons to Russia annually.
"Unfortunately, there are companies in Europe that are owned or effectively controlled by Russia and its sanctioned oligarchs. They continue to supply the Russians with necessary materials, even now," Zelenskyy said in a clear jab at the host country.

The Aughinish plant is owned by Russian Rusal, which in turn is dominated by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.
Rusal also owns Kubal in Sundsvall.
Every ton of raw materials that end up in Russia is used against us in this war, Zelenskyy added during a press conference with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
Reports about the giant Irish export - which, among other things, contributes directly to the production of, for example, Russian fighter jets - have led to demands for action from the Irish government, which is also accused of having helped to water down sanctions against the company, so as not to risk important jobs.

However, the Irish Prime Minister promises a swift response following an investigation that is currently underway.
