Work to restore the power supply at the nuclear power plant in Ukrainian Zaporizhzhia has begun, according to the UN's atomic energy agency IAEA.

The nuclear power plant, which has been occupied by Russian forces since March 2022, was left without power at the end of September. It is the longest time the nuclear power plant has been without external power supply since Russia's large-scale invasion war began.

According to the IAEA's Director General Rafael Grossi, Russian and Ukrainian forces have established a special ceasefire so that repairs can be carried out in a safe manner.

"Both sides have cooperated constructively with the IAEA to enable the implementation of the complex repair plan", says Grossi in a statement and adds that the repair work is "crucial" for safety.

The nuclear power plant, which is Europe's largest, has been receiving power from diesel generators since September 23, and Grossi has previously said that repairs to power lines are needed on both sides of the front line.
