He was challenged by 13 other politicians in an election campaign that critics said was heavily controlled by the incumbent government, with allegations of threats, violence and arrests.
"We feel humbled by the trust we have received," said Hakainde Hichilema after the election results.
Hichilema has been in power since 2021 and the election result was expected, according to AFP.
