The Japanese judge Yuji Iwasawa has been appointed as the new head of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is based in The Hague.
Iwasawa replaces Nawaf Salam, Lebanon's new prime minister.
The 70-year-old Iwasawa has been a member of the court since 2018, and was previously a professor of international law at the University of Tokyo and chairman of the UN Committee on Human Rights.
The ICJ should not be confused with the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is also based in The Hague in the Netherlands.
