Hundreds of drones against Ukraine – children injured

Two people have been killed and around 20 injured in nighttime Russian attacks on Ukraine. Several of the injured are reported to be children.

Russia attacked Ukraine with more than 650 drones and more than 50 missiles last night, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"It is important that all such vicious attacks on civilians hit back at Russia with concrete consequences – sanctions and real pressure," he writes on X.

The deaths and most of the injuries were reported from Zaporizhia in the southeast of the country, writes the AFP news agency. Pictures show how several floors of a large residential building have collapsed.

Several people have also been injured in attacks near Kiev, The Kyiv Independent reports. Explosions have also been heard in the western parts of the country, far from the frontline in the east, according to the newspaper.

The attacks have left large parts of Ukraine without power.

"Russia continues its energy terror," writes the country's Energy Minister Svitlana Hryntchuk on X, stating that Russian forces have attacked with both missiles and drones.

In connection with the Russian attacks, Poland and allied countries sent fighter jets, according to the Polish military on X. Ground-based air defense and radar surveillance systems were also put on standby.

"These operations are preventive in nature and aim to secure and protect airspace, especially in areas bordering the threatened areas," they write.
