The previous world record was held by Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda, who ran 57.20 in Lisbon in March this year.
On Sunday, the record was broken by a full 29 seconds. The new world record time is still awaiting ratification.
Yomif Kejelcha set a world record for the distance in 2024 in Valencia, Spain, with a time of 57.30.
It is worth noting that Kiplimo ran 56.42 in Barcelona last year, but the time was not ratified because the competition conditions did not meet International Association of Athletics Federations rules.
In the women's race, Fotyen Tesfay of Ethiopia won in 1:03.57.
