Former EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson is expected to become the EU's new special envoy for Ukrainian refugees within the union. This is reported by Politico which refers to sources with insight.
Johansson, who from 2019 to 2024 was EU Commissioner with responsibility for home affairs and migration issues, will on the newly established post help to monitor the Commission's long-term strategy for Ukrainian refugees.
Last month, the Commission extended the temporary protection for the approximately 4.3 million Ukrainians who have sought protection in the EU since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The role of the special envoy will be to "improve coordination, represent the interests of Ukrainians and implement practical support tools, including the development of centers", announced Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner last week.
