Egypt’s parliament on Monday gave President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi the green light to “take necessary measures” to support Saudi Arabia, which is facing escalating attacks by the Houthi movement. Al-Sisi said the measures would be defensive.
“Egypt and its parliament have declared support for what is called the defense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, thereby declaring war on the Republic of Yemen,” Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a member of the movement’s politburo, wrote on Telegram.
The Iran-backed Houthi movement controls much of Yemen and is at war with Saudi Arabia and the internationally recognized Yemeni government, which the Saudis support. Houthi forces have stepped up attacks on Saudi Arabia and disrupted maritime traffic in the Red Sea, also hitting Egypt hard.
