More than 70 people have been killed in fighting in and around the city of Taiz in southwestern Yemen in less than a day, sources on both sides told AFP.
The statement comes after the government’s announcement of an intensified offensive against the Houthi movement.
"Today, I announce the start of military operations to retake the remaining territories of the republic and impose the authority of the state and its institutions throughout the country," said the leader of the Yemeni Presidential Council, Rashad al-Alimi, earlier on Sunday.
His statement came just hours after the Houthi movement severed the main supply route between Taiz and the government’s temporary capital, Aden.
