"We started this series right after "Yellowstone". It would have been nice to have some time off, but on the other hand it felt natural to continue," says Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth, to TT.
"Dutton Ranch" begins with a fire destroying everything Beth and Rip have in Montana. They manage to buy a new ranch in Texas and move there with their foster son Carter. There they immediately get into a fight with a powerful rancher played by Anette Bening. Murder, romance and intrigue follow. Ed Harris has a major role as the local veterinarian.
Cole Hauser, who plays Rip, tells TT:
"Towards the end of "Yellowstone" we heard rumours of a possible sequel, but it was only a few months before it was due to start that it became official. And Kelly and I called each other and said, 'Is it really going to start so soon after Yellowstone?'"
"No cheap series"
But it became a series, and although Reilly and Hauser hope for a second season, they say that nothing about it is finalized yet.
"First we have to hope that the audience likes what we've done. These are not cheap series to make, and they have to be done right," says Cole Hauser.
Kelly Reilly fills in:
"My hope is that the audience will like and accept that our characters are in a new world now. And if they like it, hopefully there will be a second season."
"A survivor"
Beth Dutton is undoubtedly one of the toughest female roles in a TV series right now. Kelly Reilly laughs.
"Yes, she has her moments. She's a survivor, and I was able to build that to a crescendo over the six seasons of "Yellowstone." She's mine and I'm defending her now. And the new series is a fresh start for Beth."
Who is Beth when she's not fighting for her father's memory? What is her identity? Kelly Reilly highlights her character's big heart and strength - a strength she sees as feminine, not masculine.
"This is something that Taylor Sheridan understands and writes about so beautifully. All of his characters are multifaceted, they are a mixture of light and dark and of evil and good and it is up to the audience to judge them and decide who they are."
