She has been called the "dot queen" and has become one of the world's most recognized artists with her psychedelic paintings, sculptures and installations.
The news of Yayoi Kusama's death came from her company on Thursday, according to AFP.
"She continued to paint until her last days, never putting down her brush, and continued to explore eternal love and the eternal soul," a statement said.
In 2016, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm showed a large retrospective exhibition of her work.
Kusama has been active as an artist since the 1960s. Her career has seen a surge in popularity over the past decade, largely due to the popularity of taking selfies against the backdrop of her colorful art.
