Yasin Ayari scored Brighton’s third league goal of the season in the 11th minute.
The attacking midfielder was perfectly positioned when the ball fell in front of him after a hard tackle out on the wing. From close range, Ayari easily scored what proved to be the only goal of the match.
With three goals, the 23-year-old has already equalled his Premier League goal tally from last season, when he scored three in 29 league matches.
Manchester City pressed for an equaliser but were held to a 1-0 defeat at home at the Etihad Stadium. The club were level with Arsenal on 21 points at the top of the Premier League table going into the weekend’s match, but have now suffered two straight league defeats. Last weekend, Manchester City lost 2-1 away to Aston Villa.
Brighton are closing in on the top two with 19 points.
Arsenal have played one match fewer and face fifth-placed Liverpool away on Sunday.
