Xi also said that war in the Middle East does not serve “common interests” and called on the BRICS countries to “reject all forms of protectionism,” reports the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua.
In a joint statement, the leaders call for calm in the Middle East:
"We express deep concern about the continued escalation in the Middle East/West Asia and, with reference to our respective national positions, call for the utmost restraint and for the avoidance of actions that could further aggravate the situation," the statement said.
In the statement, they also condemn attacks on civilian infrastructure and nuclear facilities, without singling out a specific party for the attack.
Xi Jinping is at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India, along with leaders from the eleven BRICS countries. Among others, Russian President Vladimir Putin is participating in the meeting.
