Xi has "full confidence" that the people of China and Taiwan will be united, the Chinese leader said during the meeting.
It is an inevitable part of the future, Xi told Cheng.
It is the first visit to China in a decade by a leader of Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party. Cheng's trip has sparked debate in Taiwan, where critics say she is too pro-Beijing.
And Cheng seems to be following Xi's lead.
By opposing Taiwan independence, we can avoid war, prevent tragedies and work together to create peace, Cheng said at a press conference after the meeting.
