“I think it is a huge honor to become the coach of the Dutch national team,” Hernández said in a press release.
The 46-year-old Spaniard replaces Ronald Koeman, who left the position after this summer's World Cup in North America.
Xavi has been without a coaching job since leaving Barcelona two years ago. Before that, he coached al-Sadd in Qatar.
The midfielder had a highly successful playing career. He played more than 500 games for Barcelona and won several major titles, including the Champions League four times. He was also a key player in Spain's 2010 World Cup and Euro 2008 and 2012 victories.
