The WTA is following in the footsteps of the International Olympic Committee and the International Ski Federation and introducing gender tests for players competing on the tour.
This is a one-time test that checks whether the athlete has the SRY gene - a negative test result allows them to play on the tour. The test is carried out through a blood, saliva or cheek swab.
For Sweden's second highest ranked player on the tour, Caijsa Hennemann, the news came as a shock.
"It must have been bad information. I haven't heard any talk about it at competitions either. It's been completely silent about this, at least among the players I've hung around with. No one has brought up the subject," she tells Expressen .
