On Thursday, the message "Clean hands dirty" was painted in red on a fountain at the memorial, located on the National Mall in the US capital. The fountain was also filled with foam.

The damage has been condemned, not least by President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform.

A woman has been arrested, Jeanine Pirro, the federal prosecutor in the capital region, said on social media. According to Pirro, the woman faces up to ten years in prison.

The memorial, located near the Lincoln Memorial, was erected in memory of Americans who served and died during World War II.
