Hubert Hurkacz is out of Wimbledon.
The Polish world number seven threw himself to save a ball – and succeeded – but injured himself in the process.
After a shorter pause, he was able to return to play, but after two more balls, he was finally forced to throw in the towel.
The victory was thus awarded to the Frenchman Arthur Fils, and Hurkacz's Wimbledon journey ended already in the second round.
The 20-year-old talent Fils impressed greatly in the match and led 2–1 in sets. When Hurkacz injured himself, a tiebreak was underway in the fourth set.
It's not nice to win in that way against a friend. We had a good match, he threw himself all over the place. I hope he comes back soon. Now I'm focusing on the next match, says Fils.
Hurkacz reached the semifinal in Wimbledon 2021.
For Arthur Fils, Wimbledon continues with a match in the third round against Roman Safiullin, a 26-year-old Russian playing under a neutral flag. On Thursday, Safiullin defeated the Czech Tomas Machac with 3–1 in sets.
Also, Novak Djokovic advanced, as expected, to the third round. The Serbian superstar faced on Thursday the 277-ranked Briton Jacob Fearnley. Wildcard player Fearnley managed to win a set, but was ultimately not particularly close to beating the seven-time Wimbledon winner. Djokovic won with 3–1 in sets and will next face Alexei Popyrin, Australia.
