Guterres will open this year's General Assembly with a speech this afternoon Swedish time, when he will call for de-escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, free shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and a ceasefire in Ukraine, he told reporters last week.
Traditionally, Brazilian President Lula da Silva follows, followed by the president of the host country - in this case, Donald Trump.
"I am going to the UN meeting to have a conversation with Trump and tell him not to interfere in Brazil's elections," Lula da Silva said last week, according to AFP.
Brazil is going to elections in October and Trump has expressed support for Lula's opponent, the right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, who is the son of the country's former president Jair Bolsonaro.
At 7:15 p.m. Swedish time, Trump will participate in a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During the meeting, the American is expected to press for Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has also travelled to New York and is expected to speak on Wednesday. He is the highest-ranking Iranian representative to visit the United States since the US and Israel attacked Iran in late February.
"We will make the best use of this opportunity to make the international community aware of Iran's difficult situation," Pezeshkian said on Iranian television before flying to the United States, according to AFP.
