"Fate wanted my last match to be a World Cup final. It wasn't the result we wanted, but I leave with my head held high, with this team trying until the last second," Otamendi writes on Instagram.

The 38-year-old made seven appearances during the World Cup. In the final, he was substituted in the first half when Lisandro Martinez was injured. In total, he made 139 appearances for the national team, scoring eight goals. He was part of Argentina's victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

"Thank you Argentina for letting me fulfil my dream of becoming world champion and wearing the most beautiful jersey in the world."

The centre-back recently left Portuguese club Benfica to play for Argentine club River Plate.
