Volpato was reportedly stopped by police in Sydney twice on Friday morning, on one occasion for driving his car 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit.

On the first occasion, he passed a breathalyser test and was only fined. Two hours later, he was stopped again. This time, he was given an on-site drug test that tested positive for cocaine. A second sample has been sent for analysis.

Volpato switched national teams from Italy to Australia ahead of the World Cup. He played in three of Australia's matches during the tournament and plays his club football for Italian side Sassuolo.
