After mixing and matching in the group stage - especially the triumph in the opening match against Turkey - Australia has made it to the World Cup finals for the third time in the country's history. But that's where it has historically stopped. In 2006 they fell to Italy and in 2022 to Argentina. A curiosity is that both - Italy and Argentina - later went on to win the entire tournament.
"Finishing second in the group is a great achievement for us and something we are proud of. Now we want to be the first generation in Australian history to win a World Cup knockout match," says midfielder Jackson Irvine.
The winner of this match will face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the round of 16.

There is no doubt that Argentina are the super favorites. Lionel Messi, who plays for MLS club Inter Miami, will play the match on home soil. The icon is looking forward to scoring more goals and making more history, but the question is whether it will happen.
Because if you believe the president of Cape Verde, Argentina will be eliminated. They will lose the match 0–1.
"We are playing to win and we will do it 1-0," José Maria Neves told the BBC.
When expectations for a team are so low, it's important that we write our own chapter in history. A country like Cape Verde should always strive to surprise the world, and I'm convinced we can do that.

For the first time in a World Cup, Colombia will face Ghana. Colombia, who impressed during the group stage by conceding only one goal and holding Portugal to a goalless draw, is looking to reach the round of 16 for the fourth time in its history.
Ghana is aiming for its third advance to the round of 16. Their record against South American opposition in the World Cup playoffs includes two heavy losses, against Brazil in the round of 16 in 2006 and Uruguay in the quarter-finals in 2010.
The winner of this match will face either Switzerland or Algeria in Vancouver.
