The popular culture phenomenon Labubu is coming to the big screen. Sony has bought the film rights and has signed on director Paul King, writes The Hollywood Reporter.

King is behind films such as “Wonka” and “Paddington.” The film’s plot and planned release date are not known.

Labubu was created by Hong Kong-born illustrator Kasing Lung as one of several monsters in a series of books inspired by Norse mythology. For Pop Mart, which owns the rights, the dolls have been a cash cow like no other. In 2024, the company made a profit of $1.8 billion, a more than 100 percent increase from the previous year. Sales of Labubu dolls alone increased by 726 percent, according to the New York Times.
