At least 34 women's shelters have closed their protected accommodations since new legal requirements were introduced in 2024, according to the associations Unizon and Roks reports P4 Gävleborg.

In Gävleborg, none of the women's shelters have been able to continue.

It feels incredibly sad that the feet will be knocked out from under the women's shelters in the way that this permit requirement will lead to, says Ameli Edvinsson, chairman of the women's shelter Blåklockan in Gävle, which has put its accommodation on pause, to P4.

The permit requirement introduced in April 2024 entails new requirements for manned and salaried staff, which is difficult to solve for non-profit organizations.

We are fairly certain that we would be able to do it very well, with all the knowledge, experience, and competence we have. We have seen that before. But based on the permit requirement that exists, we will not be able to do it today, because we do not have the resources for it, says Ameli Edvinsson.
