Women are generally more interested in culture than men – with the exception of computer, mobile and video games. This is according to a report from the Swedish Agency for Cultural Analysis.

The report, which is based on the annual SOM survey's questions about cultural interest, shows that women as a group are more interested in art, reading, crafts, dance, theater, role-playing and board games, as well as painting and writing.

When it comes to music, film and history, the interest is about equally great.

The only cultural area where men's interest is stronger than women's is computer, mobile and video games.

Interest in different forms of culture varies with age. The youngest group, 16–29 years old, is most interested in music, crafts, painting and writing, and digital gaming.

The groups 30–49 and 50–65 years old are most interested in film and the oldest group, 64–90 years old, like art and reading.

Music is the cultural area that attracts the most (90 percent) regardless of gender and age, followed by film, reading and history (70).

Theater and art interest about half of the respondents, while digital and analog games and crafts attract 40–45 percent.

The narrowest cultural areas, dance and writing and painting, are important to about 35 percent.

The report from the Swedish Agency for Cultural Analysis is based on the questions about cultural interest in the SOM Institute's annual survey on society, opinion and media from 2023.

A total of 26,250 people between the ages of 16 and 90 were included, of which 3,750 people received a questionnaire about cultural habits and cultural interest.

Respondents were asked to answer questions about how habits and interests are connected to the following cultural areas:

Art, cultural heritage/history, film, music, reading, needlework/crafts, drawing/painting, writing, dance, theatre/performances, board games/role-playing games/parlor games and computer games/mobile games/video games.

The response rate in the SOM survey as a whole was 48 percent.

According to the SOM Institute, the demographic representativeness was good, with the exception of underrepresentation in the younger age groups, which makes analysis of differences linked to age more difficult.
