AI researcher Timnit Gebru receives the award for paving the way for “digital technology rooted in justice.” Gebru has long been a critic of AI development and has worked to create AI that protects people.
Jalila Haider from Pakistan is being praised for breaking barriers as a female lawyer within the minority Hazara group.
Also commended are the Rural Women's Assembly, which brings together female farmers in southern Africa, and the human rights organization Georgian Young Lawyers' Association.
"They are rewriting the rules that authoritarian and patriarchal leaders and Silicon Valley's most powerful men have long taken for granted they were allowed to write themselves," says Right Livelihood CEO Ole von Uexküll.
The prize winners will receive one million kronor each.
