At 20 o'clock last night, Israeli fire was directed at a multi-story building belonging to the al-Kahlut family, resulting in 25 deaths, according to spokesman Mahmud Bassal to the news agency AFP.
Among the dead are at least five women and five children, he adds. But the situation is difficult to survey, since victims are still buried under the rubble.
Residents are trying, without sufficient equipment, to rescue people who are trapped, says Bassal.
Israel has often been accused during the Gaza War of ignoring the considerations for civilians that must be taken according to international law. This autumn, there have been several instances of over a hundred fatalities, many of which are reported to have been civilians, in individual attacks on residential areas.
