An alarm about the accident was raised at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance. She has life-threatening injuries, Sahlgrenska University Hospital says.
The tram has been taken out of service and will undergo a technical examination, the police say on their website.
