Businessman Witkoff, currently in Davos for the World Economic Forum, is President Donald Trump's envoy to negotiate a peace settlement in the war in Ukraine. He will be accompanied on the trip to Russia by Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner.
Witkoff said that "the Russians" asked for the meeting and that "a lot of progress" has been made in recent weeks in ending the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.
