Wilma Hellström Shines Amid Swedish Team's Rocky European Championship Start

Wilma Hellström's flawless round promises well. Otherwise, the Swedish riders got a bumpy start – and risk missing Friday's team final in the European Championship. Wilma did a fine round. The rest must do it better, says Petronella Andersson.

She, Erika Lickhammer van Helmond and Amanda Landeblad both had clear rounds.

It is at least one too many and the inexperienced Swedish team is in 14th place after the initial time trial. The weak start can be repaired, but there is not much room for mistakes in Thursday's round.

Hellström, who was part of the gold team in Milan 2023, got a strong start instead. Faultless and fast. She rode after Lickhammer and felt the pressure to perform for the team.

There was no choice, I had to be good. Somewhere it's a pretty nice feeling too. You find a calm in it. Nothing to lose, it's just good that matters.

Cicci did not disappoint her.

She was absolutely fantastic, the best ever, I would say.

Cicci on the bit

With a new one in her mouth, the mare was on the bit.

It's a completely new one, but similar to what I've always had on her for eight years. She felt very pleased. It's a gentle bit, a rubber bit.

Debutant Amanda Landeblad about the round on For Killy:

This was not at all how I wanted to start this championship. You have to be disappointed for a while, but I have to forget this round and move on tomorrow, she says.

"This won't do"

Angelie von Essen did not make it into the team and is competing only individually. On Voila, it could not have started much worse, with a major clear round already on the second obstacle.

Then I thought that now you have to damn well shape up, this won't do, she says.

Sometimes it doesn't hurt to get angry. For the rest, it went like a dance.

He's such a fighter. I get completely touched, says von Essen.

Going into Thursday's round, Great Britain leads the team competition ahead of Germany and Belgium. Individually, the trio Daniel Coyle, Ireland, Richard Vogel, Germany and the Briton Donald Whitaker are in the top.

Thursday: Team jumping, first round. Included in the individual competition. Start 15.00.

Friday: Team jumping, second round. Included in the individual competition. The team medals are awarded. Start 15.45.

Saturday: Horse inspection before the individual final.

Sunday: The individual final is decided in two rounds. Starts at 14.00 and 16.30.
