The man and a 14-year-old boy were standing on Easter Day and fishing on a cliff by the small beach Wattamolla when a wave swept them away. When lifeguards later found them in the water, they could only revive the boy.
On Easter Eve, a fisherman was also swept to his death from a cliff further south along the coast of New South Wales. On Friday, at least three people drowned in the same state, and a woman was found dead in the water in the neighboring state of Victoria.
Several people are also missing after disappearing in the waves near the major cities of Sydney and Melbourne.
The waves of the Pacific Ocean have been able to reach heights of up to 3.5 meters in the area in recent days. The lifesaving society SLSA warned of hazardous weather as early as Thursday.
