In Congo-Kinshasa, 999 people have died from the disease, according to figures from the country's health ministry. In neighboring Uganda, two people have died.

Nearly 2,500 confirmed cases of the infection have been reported.

WHO's head of emergency management, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said earlier in July that the organization's analyses indicate that "the scale of the outbreak is at least two to four times larger than the number of cases we have identified."

The current outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo variant, for which there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment.
