Pahlavi is seen by many as a likely interim leader in an Iran after the fall of the mullahs. In recent weeks, he has urged the protesters to continue and said he was ready to return to Iran to lead a transitional government.
However, as the son of the last Shah of Iran, who was overthrown by the people during the 1979 revolution, he is a controversial and contentious player in the divided Iranian opposition.
