A 25-year-old woman has been found dead after a search operation in Salem, southwest of Stockholm. Two people were arrested: one on suspicion of murder and the other on suspicion of kidnapping. The latter has since been released. This is what we know about the incident.

The police received a report of a missing woman on Boxing Day, when she did not return home that night. The report came from a relative.

An extensive search operation in Rönninge and surrounding areas was launched on Friday. After a number of findings were made in connection with the case, a preliminary investigation into kidnapping was opened.

Dogs, quad bikes, helicopters and drones were used in the search.

The police also initiated a so-called rescue service, which deployed civilian actors in the search effort. Among them, the voluntary organization Search and Rescue (SAR) participated.

At a press conference on Sunday, the police announced that the woman was found dead on Saturday evening. It was during an operation targeting a suspect that police found the woman, and the crime classification was then changed to murder. The police would not say where the woman was found.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the case. They were arrested at different times and locations.

One person is being held on probable-cause suspicion of murder. The other was arrested on reasonable suspicion, the lower level of suspicion, for kidnapping.

According to Aftonbladet, one of the people is already known to the police.

On Monday afternoon, the arrest warrant for the person suspected of kidnapping was lifted. The person has been removed from the preliminary investigation.

By 12 noon Tuesday, the prosecutor must decide whether the person suspected of murder should be remanded in custody or released.
