Shortly before the attack, a picture of a sword in a school toilet was published on a TikTok account that is interested in and celebrates school attacks.
At 2:06 p.m. on Friday, August 21, the first alarm was received about ongoing deadly violence at Brinellskolan high school. A perpetrator with a sword had entered and injured several people.
Three minutes after the alarm, at 2:09 p.m., several police patrols were on their way to the school. Several schools and preschools in the area were evacuated.
At 2:16 p.m., the first police patrol on the scene announced that a suspected perpetrator had been neutralized and arrested. According to police, shots were fired during the arrest, but the suspect was not hit.
As police continued to enter the school to secure the premises, a 17-year-old girl was found dead. Three more people were injured.
Two boys between the ages of 12 and 17 are still being treated for serious injuries, but their condition is described as stable. A third boy was slightly injured and was able to leave the hospital on Friday. In connection with the incident, Region Västmanland went into a state of emergency, which ended on Saturday.
The man arrested and detained for the attack is 18 years old, according to police. The suspect is a student at the school and had a key tag for the building. According to court documents obtained by Dagens Nyheter, he was sentenced to juvenile detention last year for assault after an incident at a school in Fagersta.
On Friday, police conducted searches at two addresses in Fagersta with connections to the suspect.
On Friday evening, the police and the municipality held a press conference, where it was confirmed that one person had been killed and three injured in the attack. The police had no reason to believe that there were more perpetrators.
On Saturday, police confirmed that the deceased was a 17-year-old girl.
On Sunday, the 18-year-old suspect was taken into custody on probable cause for murder and attempted murder. The crime scene is being investigated and hundreds of interviews are being held with students and staff at the school.
