The reason for the coaching change is the club's poor start to the season, writes West Ham in a statement on its website.
The London team is currently in 14th place in the top division of English football with only six wins in 20 rounds. The patience with Julen Lopetegui was short, the 58-year-old Spaniard only managed to lead the team in 22 matches before he was fired.
"The first half of the 2024-25 season has not been in line with the club's ambitions," says West Ham in a statement.
A replacement seems to be more or less clear. According to The Athletic, Graham Potter is expected to be presented as the new head coach shortly.
The 48-year-old Potter made his breakthrough as a coach in Östersund, leading the club all the way from Division 2 to the top division, winning the Swedish Cup and securing a spot in the Europa League.
After his time in Sweden, Potter has coached Swansea, Brighton, and Chelsea. He has been out of work since he was fired from Chelsea in April 2023.
Julen Lopetegui is the fifth coach in the Premier League to be fired this season, after Erik ten Hag (Manchester United), Steve Cooper (Leicester), Gary O'Neil (Wolverhampton), and Russell Martin (Southampton).
West Ham's next match is on Friday, against Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup.
