The Malian musician Toumani Diabaté has passed away after a period of illness, 58 years old, reports SVT Culture.
He was a star both within traditional West African music and also made several boundary-crossing collaborations with pop and world music artists, including the Icelandic artist Björk and the American blues musician Taj Mahal.
He has also performed at the Glastonbury festival in England and at the Roskilde festival in Denmark.
Toumani Diabaté's instrument was the kora – a 21-stringed harp.
