The comprehensive trial against Weinstein ended with a guilty verdict for sexual assault, an acquittal on a similar charge and a charge of rape where the jury was deadlocked.
The reason is that the jury's chairman said he would not participate in further deliberations after feeling threatened by other jurors. As a result, Judge Curtis Farber was forced to invalidate the relevant part of the trial.
Direct Threat
A juror said something like "I will run into you outside the courtroom one day," said the judge and concluded that it was a threat – and that he therefore chose to dissolve the jury.
On Wednesday, it was announced that the jury had been divided over the charge of rape, acquitted in a case of sexual assault and convicted of another case of sexual assault.
The trial in Manhattan, New York, took place after a previous trial, which dealt with the same charges, was declared invalid. At the 2020 trial, Weinstein was convicted on the three charges.
Further Prison Sentences
Weinstein's lawyers later chose to appeal the verdict where he was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault.
As a result of the invalidated last charge, the prosecutor has obtained a guilty verdict in one of the three cases. The sentence for the guilty verdict has not been determined.
In 2022, Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years in prison in Los Angeles for assault and rape of a woman.
