In mid-April, the new trial against Weinstein began. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual abuse by a court in New York in 2020. However, after his defense appealed the verdict, it was overturned by the state's highest court, citing errors, and the trial has now been retried.
Since Weinstein is now choosing not to testify, final arguments can be held as early as Tuesday, and then it's time for the jury to deliberate.
Weinstein has not responded to questions about the allegations against him in previous trials either. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, has said that Weinstein carefully considered whether to testify this time.
The allegations against Harvey Weinstein surfaced in October 2017 and became the starting point for the #metoo movement. In total, more than 80 women have accused Harvey Weinstein of abuse, harassment, or rape. Weinstein has denied all allegations, claiming that all sexual relationships were consensual.
In 2022, Weinstein was also sentenced to 16 years in prison in Los Angeles for assault and rape against a woman.
